Workers compensation and accident claimants will share in a $72.5 million settlement with the Hartford Insurance Company. The claimants had settled workers compensation and/or personal injury and accident claims with The Hartford in what are known as structured settlements, which means that the money is paid out over time. The Hartford used annuities to fund the structured settlement payments and ran the annuities through its life insurance division, Hartford Life. The suit claims that The Hartford had wrongfully withheld about 15% of the money owed the claimants on their settlements as taxes, fees and profits.
