$5.8 Million Verdict For Fired White Employee in Discrimination Case
A white employee fired by an El Paso utility company filed a race discrimination lawsuit in which a jury recently returned a $5.8 million verdict. Anti-discrimination laws protect everybody, white, black and Hispanic and otherwise. The employee, Mark Duncan, a six year employee with a good record, was fired two days after being physically threatened by a Hispanic human resources worker. He claimed race discrimination, that the company decided to "fire the white guy too" because it feared a discrimination lawsuit from the human resources worker and wanted to create a defense.
The jury agreed and its verdict was as follows: $129,913 in past lost wages, $669,196 in future lost earnings, $5,000 in compensatory damages, and $5 million in punitive damages.
