The ongoing defective product trial in Los Angeles regarding the ASR hip implant device has revealed further details about risks and problems with the device overlooked by its maker, Johnson & Johnson, including the following:

  • Johnson & Johnson's orthopedic unit used incorrect or inadequate standards to assess the device's risks before it went on sale to the public

  • although records showed that the device would have a high rate of wear caused by the patient moving, company officials did not account for this wear on the device

  • the company's president, Andrew Eckdahl, was emailed about the device's problems 3 years before it was taken off the market.

The trial is ongoing in Los Angeles.
