A female 22-year veteran of the Louisiana State University police department has filed suit claiming that sex discrimination is the reason she was not promoted to chief of the university police department. Maj. Martha Helen Haire claims that she was better qualified than the male selected for the chief's position, noting that she holds both bachelor's and master's degrees. Although LSU identified a college degree as part of the position's minimum qualifications when it initially posted the job opening, it made a male, Lawrence Rabelais, the interim pending his completion of the degree requirements and then permanently awarded him the position. Shortly before being named the permanent chief, Rabelais gave Haire, according to her lawsuit, her lowest performance evaluation in 22 years and alleged that she lacked the technical skills and know-how for the job she had performed for more than two decades.
