Misrepresentation of plans to offer severance benefits can violate an employee's rights.  A former Xerox employee has filed suit claiming that she was wrongfully denied opportunity to participate in the company's voluntary reduction-in-force programs.  Becky McCartney claims that she lost $170,000 in severance benefits that were offered one month after she retired.  She was told, prior to her retirement announcement, that the company would not offer future severance packages and, as a result, she decided to go ahead and retire, a decision that cost her $170,000, the suit claims.
