Racial harassment or a hostile work environment based on race has yielded a $1.2 million jury verdict against Nucor, a steel company.  African-American employees at Nucor's Arkansas plant claimed that they were subjected to racial harassment and a hostile work environment based on race including the following:

  • jokes about lynchings and racial slurs were broadcast over the plant's P.A. system
  • supervisors belittled and ridiculed black employees
  • nooses were displayed in the workplace

Each of the six plaintiffs were awarded $100,000 in compensatory damages and $100,000 in puntive damages.
