Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. The New Jersey Supreme Court affirmed a jury verdict returned in favor of a family of a 50-year-old advertising executive in New Jersey, who died one year after being diagnosed with mesothelioma. Mark Bittita had two sources of asbestos exposure: (1) he worked summers and holidays while a college student at a General Motors warehouse handling auto parts; and, (2) his father also worked at a General Motors plant in carried home asbestos fibers on his clothing.

The damages were awarded by a jury as follows: $8 million for pain and suffering; $2 million to his wife for loss of consortium with her husband; $9,281,660 for lost future earnings; $2,030,544 for loss of services; and 3 million to each of his daughters for loss of their father.
