Inadequate driver training and a record of safety violations by a trucking company contributed to a fatal trucking accident and a $58 million jury verdict in the wrongful death lawsuit that followed. Kevin Udy's truck collided with a tanker trailer that turned in front of him; a Santa Fe, New Mexico jury found that the tanker's driver, Monte Lyons, was trained inadequately and that the trucking company, Bergstein Enterprises, had a record of safety violations.  The verdict broke down as follows: $11.5 million for actual damages and $47 million for punitive damages. The $58 million verdict was believed to be a New Mexico record.
