The death toll from the now nation-wide fungal meningitis outbreak has reached 29 with over 400 reported cases.  Fungal meningitis infects the tissues that line the brain and spinal cord; it can be deadly but is not contagious.  The outbreak stems from a steroid medication manufactured by the New England Compounding Company; FDA inspectors have found mulitiple safety violations at the plant.
