Whistleblowers on healthcare fraud helped the government recover some $1.6 billion in the fiscal year ended Sept. 30 the Justice Department has announced. An additional $800 million was also recovered as a result of whistlblowing on other types of government fraud.
The Justice Department currently has a backlog of about 1,000 healthcare fraud whistleblower cases it is investigating.
The federal False Claims Act rewards whistleblowers with 15-25% of the amount recovered.
