Unsafe stormwater grates that run parallel to the traffic direction caused significant injuries to a Nashville bicyclist, who has settled her personal injury lawsuit for $196,056.  Margaret Yoste had her front tire drop into a stormwater grate that runs parallel to the street and traffic and was thrown over her handlebars suffering substantial injuries.

Perpendicular stormwater grates are safe for bicyclists to ride over; Nashville, as other cities should be, is in the process of replacing the parallel grates with perpendicular grates.  There is a duty to provide for reasonably safe roads, streets and and bike trails.
