A same-sex lesbian couple who was house-hunting in South Daytona, Florida has claimed that they were denied a loan from Bank of America because of their sexual orientation. The couple filed a complaint with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) after the bank refused to go through with the loan one day before the scheduled closing. In March 2012, HUD finalized a new Equal Access to Housing rule that prohibits lenders from discriminating against borrowers based on their sexual orientation. The bank has reached a settlement with HUD and will pay a small administrative fine. This appears to be the first case enforcing this particular anti-discrimination rule.
