A newspaper reporter for the Chicago Tribune has sued the paper for unpaid overtime compensation. The reporter, Carolyn Rusin, worked for the Trib's TribLocal division and covered local stories in the Chicago suburbs. She claims that she was misclassified as exempt from overtime under the creative professional exemption, which requires use of "invention, imagination and talent," because she covered school board and city meetings.

This is an interesting case. Reporting sometimes requires investigation and interpretation of information, which would seem to meet the creative professional exemption. However, reporting that simply recites the happenings at a school board meeting may not.
