Nurses suffer work injuries to their back at three times the rate of construction workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This comes forward from an NPR report: Hospitals Fail To Protect Nursing Staff from Becoming Patients.  Some of the surprising to me statistics coming from this report are the following:

  • Nursing employees suffer 35,000 back and other injuries each year severe enough to cause them to miss work

  • Nursing assistants and orderlies suffer back injuries at three times the rate of construction laborers

  • Nursing assistants suffer more work injuries than any other job including warehouse workers, truckers and stock clerks

There's a simple reason for all these injuries to nurses and nursing assistants: they do a lot of lifting of patients.
