Overbilling and defrauding the federal government may cost the software maker, Oracle, up to $1 billion in a whistleblower suit filed under the federal False Claims Act reports Bloomberg News, "Oracle Damages in False Claims Case May Reach $1 Billion." Whistleblower Paul Frascella, a former Oracle employee, filed the suit under the federal False Claims Act alleging that Oracle had defrauded the federal government by failing to provide it the same discounts as it gave commercial customers.
The False Claims Act allows whistleblowers to file suit on behalf of the federal government against contractors and corporations that have cheated or defrauded the federal government and its taxpayers -- all of us -- out of money, often substantial sums. For their trouble, which is not to be underestimated, the whistleblower may retain 15-25% of the money recovered.
