Must time a police officer spends putting on and taking off his or her uniform be compensated? If such time is spent in addition to a regular 40 hour work week should it be compensated at an overtime rate?  Yes, as this settlement for $1.75 million by Oakland police officers shows.

The overtime suit is known as a "donning and doffing" suit.  It is one of many brought on behalf of police officers around the country seeking payment of their unpaid overtime compensation.
