The first case to go to trial regarding the Gynecare Prolift vaginal mesh marketed by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, Ethicon, has resulted in a jury verdict for the injured patient of $3.35 million. The jury ruled that Johnson & Johnson had not adequately warned Linda Gross, a nurse from South Dakota, of the dangers of the vaginal mesh unit and had fraudulently misled her. Gross had 18 surgeries after the implant to try and relieve constant pain and other complications. The damages awarded by the jury broke down as follows: $1.1 million for her pain and suffering; $180,000 for lost wages; $500,000 for future lost wages; $385,000 for past medical treatment; $1 million for future medical treatment; and $180,000 for her husband’s loss of companionship and conjugal affections.
