Retaliation for reporting a work injury or safety issue is a fear or concern of many employees. A government report analyzing OSHA data finds that that widespread underreporting of workplace safety and work injury issues has resulted from company pressure on employees not to report work injuries or illnesses. According to the report, a survey of occcupational health workers revealed the following:

  • more than half felt pressure to downplay work injuries or safety issues
  • nearly two-thirds knew of an employee who feared discipline or retaliation for reporting a work injury or safety issue

The report, "Enhancing OSHA's Records Audit Process Could Improve the Accuracy of Worker Injury and Illness Data," by the Government Accountability Office can be read by clicking here.
