DES was widely prescribed and used in the 50's and 60's for miscarriage prevention. It proved ineffective in stemming miscarriages but did leave a substantial trail of cancer, infertility and other physical problems in the women that used the drug. Even more and worse problems have emerged in the female children of the women who used DES. Four sisters in Boston, who suffer from breast cancer and other physical maladies, went to trial on their claims that DES was the cause of the cancer and other problems; they settled their case yesterday with the Eli Lilly Company on the second day of trial.
