Hydroxycut, a popular weight-loss product, has been recalled following announcements by the FDA that the dietary product has been linked to liver and other medical problems reports the New York Times, "Hydroxycut Diet Aids Recalled After Warning." According to the FDA, it has received a total of 23 reports linking Hydroxycut to significant medical problems including liver, kidney and heart problems.

The FDA does not have authority to review and approve dietary supplements prior to their market availability.  The manufacturers of "dietary supplements are themselves responsible for ensuring and documenting the safety and efficacy claims of their products."
