A federal court jury in south Florida found unanimously for a former Smyrna Beach firefighter in her hostile work environment gender discrmination suit. Melissa Smith had worked for the city for five years before she was fired for what the jury found to be fabricated, made-up grounds after she complained to lieutenants and captains that she was subjected to a hostile work environment based on her gender, was repeatedly harassed, denied training, unjustly suspended, and was told by a supervisor to “get pregnant so I could have you as my new secretary instead of having you fight fires.” The jury awarded Smith $244,000 in back pay and $200,000 in damages for emotional distress.
