A long-running race discrimination suit against New York City brought by black firefighters and applicants to the New York Fire Department has been settled. The city will pay over $98 million in back pay and benefits as part of the settlement.  The courts had long-ago ruled that institutional biases perpetuated race discrimination in the Fire Department affecting hiring and promotions.  As part of the settlement, the fire department will step up minority employee recruitment efforts.
