A former financial aid director, Peggy Oates, is claiming that Gaston College fired her for discriminatory reasons and in retaliation for her whistleblowing to federal officials about the college's improper financial aid practices.  Oates, a 14 year employee, was terminated, her suit claims after two key events: (1) she declined to participate in a racially discriminatory scheme initiated by the college president; and, (2) she requested the federal Department of Education audit the college's financial aid practices, an audit that revealed violations.
