Lawyers representing consumers and policyholders have filed papers claiming that State Farm Insurance Company and affilated others funneled from $2.5 to $4 million to the Illinois Supreme Court campaign of Justice Lloyd Karmeier in 2004. In August 2005, Justice Karmeier cast the deciding vote in the insurance company's favor vacating a billion dollar verdict and judgement that State Farm had defrauded its policyholders by use of inferior replacement parts. Justice Karmeier refused requests that he recuse himself from the case back at the time.
