Workplace deaths were down slightly in 2010 as compared to 2009. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 4,547 workplace deaths in 2010, four fewer than the 4551 recorded in 2009.  There were approximately 14,000 workplace deaths in 1970, the year the Occupational Safety & Health Admininstration (OSHA) was created.
